Syndrome X - what is it?

Syndrome X is a cluster of symptoms including obesity, high blood pressure and high blood glucose that was identified and named in 1988 by Dr Gerald Reaven of Stamford University. It is also known as insulin resistance syndrome or metabolic disorder syndrome. Research indicates that obesity, a diet consisting largely of carbohydrates, sugars and processed foods, or lack of physical activity can trigger the onset of Syndrome X.

People with metabolic Syndrome X have cells that are resistant to the effects of the hormone insulin. The excess of insulin and glucose in the body triggers a cluster of abnormalities in the blood, increasing risk of heart disease, obesity and Type II diabetes.

Syndrome X is a half-way house between normal blood sugar control and diabetes. If someone with insulin resistance cannot continue to secrete increased amounts of insulin to compensate for the resistance, then they may end up developing Type II diabetes.

The number of Britons with Type II diabetes is expected to double in the next 10 years.

Researchers have found that glucose generates the production of free radicals which attack and break down the cells of the body.

Because Syndrome X is believed to be a direct result of nutritional deficiency, it is believed that it can be treated best with a change in diet and lifestyle, plus nutritional supplements that contain a synergistic balance in therapeutic levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
